- Fact 1: James Reid was born in Ireland and learned gunsmithing in Scotland before moving to the U.S.
- Fact 2: On the day after Christmas in 1865 Reid was granted a patent on his new device the he referred to in writing as "My Friend."
- Fact 3: In 1886, Reid packaged his guns with 100 rounds of ammunition and sold them for $10, or about $514 in today's currency
